Cricket’s biggest rivals, England and Australia will start the proceedings for the first ever ICC World Test Championship, and the event is set to kick start, in the much-awaited test-series, The Ashes. England, being the ICC World ODI Champions will go in to the tournament with their head high, while Australia will shed the disappointment of world cup loss, and will look to avenge their world cup semi-final defeat against England.

England, though high on confidence, do have a set of concerns to address. Their top-order still looks bleak, and that is something they will need to fix. Captain Joe Root is most-likely promote himself up the order to bat at number 3. Joe Denly will take the 4th spot in the batting order. What’s good for England is that their bowling unit just got a great update with Jofra Archer getting his maiden call in the test side. However, there is an uncertainty looming around his fitness, and his availability right from the first test is still sceptical.

Australia on the other hand have their players sweat out in the nets. Their star opener David Warner was hit during the practice in the nets. However, he is expected to be fit to play from the first match. Australia’s coach Justin Langer has hinted that Usman Khawaja and James Pattinson, might be included in the playing XI. The team has a bit of thinking to do in terms of finalising their opener, between Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris, who will be joining Warner.

Just to refresh your memory a little, the Aussies currently hold the urn, after having whitewashed England 4–0, back home, in 2018. Being the title defender, a lot is at stake for the Aussies to defend it. However, Australia has not been successful in winning the series in England from the last 18 years. It was back in 2001 that they last tasted victory on the English land, with Steve Waugh’s team clinching the glorious win. Back in 2015, it was a Stuart Broad show all-through, helping the team taking an unassailable lead in the 4th test match. He was vital in bowling out Australia for a mere 60 runs in the first innings after taking 8 wickets for 15 runs.

PITCH REPORT:

The pitch doesn’t have a green topping but it does have a thick cover of grass on it. It does look like a good surface that would assist seam bowlers. It has been exposed to extreme weather conditions too, with hot sun on Monday and showers on Tuesday. Justin Langer said that the pitch had a reminiscence of the World Cup semi-final pitch, but the color of the grass looks different.

TEAM COMBINATIONS:

ENGLAND:

All eyes will be on world cup stars Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler, who will look to add solid strength in the lower-order. Ben Stokes has also been pivotal in the team, after performing both with the bat and the ball. He will also be a key player in all-corners of the game.
